Say no to standby

You probably remember that you parents told you to switch off the lights when you are not in the room. It is actually really smart to switch off your electrical equipments or items when you don’t use them. Don’t leave them on standby.

Recent studies showed that an average household wastes about 5% to 10% of its annual electric bill on electric items left on standby.

Only turn on the lights when you need them and buy energy efficient light bulbs.

You should set a good example to your kid(s) too and teach them not to waste energy.

Portion Control – it’s a good thing

According to the Wikipedia: “Portion control is understanding how much a serving size is and how many calories a serving contains. Portion control is important for weight management as the weight is defined by the total calorie intake. Healthy eating, using Aristotle’s philosophy, is the desirable middle between two extremes of excess and the other of deficiency (over eating and not eating enough), the “golden mean.” Portion control is eating a healthy balance of amount and types, of varied foods.”

So try to stick to this because recent studies showed that our portions are 3 times (!!!) bigger that they used to be.

When you cook for  your family try to think about how much food you actually giving them. It is never too late learning portion control. There’s an easy way to remember portions; you can learn to estimate serving sizes with everyday objects. It’s not complicated at all. Have a look at this list (source weightloss.about.com):

cheese (1 oz.) = a ping-pong ball

hamburger (3 oz.) = a mayo jar lid

peanut butter (1 tsp.) = one die

beef (3 oz.) = a bar of soap

rice (½ c.) = an ice cream scoop

potato = a computer mouse

dinner roll = a yo-yo

butter (1 tsp.) = a Scrabble tile

fruit (1 c.) = a tennis ball

cooked pasta (½ c.) = a golf ball

fish (3 oz.) = a checkbook

poultry (3 oz.) = a deck of playing cards

cereal (1 c.) = a baseball

salad dressing (2 Tbsp.) = a shot glass

nuts (1 oz.) = a cupped palm

Vegetables should fill half of your plate. You may think that vegetables are so expensive. I have good news for you, you can always buy frozen vegetables, they are as tasty as the fresh one and to be honest sometimes they are even fresher than the so called “fresh vegetables”, last but not least they are less expensive too.

Tap water or bottled water?

What to choose: tap water or bottled water? This is a big question and we are kind of confused when we have to answer it.

Money saving tips for moms

Recent studies actually showed that bottled water is not as pure as we think. There are many brands that come from municipal supply; it’s basically glorified tap water. Most of us can’t even taste the difference between tap water and mineral water.

The other cons of drinking tap water are:

  • bottled water is overpriced. An American drinks 21 gallons of bottled water per capita per year.

I actually made a bit of research and found out that according to the Sierra Club’s research the tap water price is $0.0015/gallon, the filtered water price is $0.13/gallon while the bottled water’s price is $3.79/gallon. This actually means that an average American family (mom+dad and 2 kids) drink 100 gallons of bottled water per year and this will cost them appr. $379 per year. That’s a lot of money to spend on bottled water. When you drink tap water that will only cost you (average American family with 2 kids) $0.15. So bottled water can actually cost more than 1000(!!) times more than tap water. Just one reason why to start drinking tap water.

  • it has evironmental issues as well. You have to transport them and recycle them. According to Michelle Mehta’s blog on nrdc.org it takes 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water.

Producing the 33 billion liters of bottled water that Americans drink each year has an energy footprint equivalent to between 32 and 54 million barrels of oil. The energy footprint of bottled water is as much as 2000 times the energy footprint of producing tap water. Manufacturing the bottles for bottled water alone produces more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. Unfortunately only about 13 percent of bottles actually get recycled. About 2 million tons of plastic water bottles a year – 66 million bottles every day – end up in landfills instead of being recycled. While nearly all municipal drinking water systems in the U.S. are covered by EPA standards, only an estimated 40% of bottled water products are regulated by the FDA. That also means that bottled water is less regulated than tap water.

Although there are some people who just don’t like to taste of the tap water or their tap water isn’t safe enough to drink; they can always buy an inexpensive water pitcher with filter that will clean the water. In our house we use a huge water filter (Brita – 3 liter). It is really handy and I can’t taste the difference.

And last but not least here comes the eye opener video about the story of the bottled water:

I hope you are not confused anymore please say no to bottled water.

Happy money saving!

Money saving tips for moms – Tip1

August 182010

In the next following days I’d like to give you some smart money saving tips.  I hope you’ll like them.

Tip 1 – Be smart with clothes

So here is the thing. Kids grow really quickly so there’s no point to buying an awful lot of clothes. Quality before quantity! Try to buy long wearing items, they will worth it.

There’s one other important thing when it comes to kids’ clothes, you don’t have to throw them away when they become too small. I’m sure you know families who would love to accept babies’ or kid’s clothes. Don’t be shy about offering or accepting clothes for your own kid/s. We all know that it costs a fortune to dress them smart.

Try to mend your kids’ clothes too, it will save you money. There’s nothing wrong with fixing clothes. When you can’t fix it just cut them up and you can use them for cleaning especially when it is made of cotton.

So this was my first money saving tips for moms!

Happy money saving :)
Naomi
